Gaia Napa Valley Hotel, American Canyon, CA

The first LEED Gold certified hotel project in the U.S.

Sentient Landscape provided community and city council presentation, site planning, landscape design, landscape installation, and maintenance for this 4-acre hotel project including restaurant, and spa.  Project features rain water harvesting and storm water management with ponds and bio-swales, recycled water and drip irrigation, native and climate appropriate planting, heat island reduction with trees, and organic soil building and maintenance.

Gaia Anderson Hotel, Anderson, CA

LEED Silver certified

Sentient Landscape provided project presentation, site planning and landscape design, for this eleven-acre, 150 Room Hotel. Project includes passive heating and cooling with trees and water features, high water efficiency irrigation system, rain water harvesting and storm water management, native and climate appropriate planting plan, and organic soil building.

Sonoma Land Trust, Santa Rosa, CA 

Design and landscape construction to replace high maintenance resource- intensive lawn and entry landscape with low maintenance, native and drought tolerant plants and high efficiency irrigation system. Project funding through City of Santa Rosa’s Green Exchange rebate program Cash for Grass.

 

 

Wildcare San Rafael, CA

Site and Landscape Consultation for five acre wildlife rescue, demonstration and education facility in Marin County.  Concepts including infrastructural layout for educational programming, public interface, animal housing, passive climate control, native gardens, storm water management, animal food production.

 

 

Burbank Heights and OrchardsSebastopol, CA,

Ecological renovation, site planning, landscape installation and maintenance for eighteen-acre senior co-housing development project with the objective of replacing high maintenance resource- intensive landscapes, including lawns and hedges, with climate-adapted, native, low maintenance plantings.  Project includes, rain gardens, high efficiency irrigation upgrades, sheet mulching and lawn replacement, bird and butterfly habitat gardens, and edible landscaping.

 

 

Avalon Springs, Middletown, CA

Site planning, ecological site analysis, and landscape design for renovation of historic hot springs resort, conference and education center. Twenty eight-acre development envelope within a 318-acre wilderness site.  Project emphasis on public flow patterns and access, integration of building, hot springs, and resort infrastructure into landscape, integrated storm water design, food and resource production, drought tolerant and multifunctional plantings.

Site Plan and Landscape Design for five story hotel and adjacent Merced College Plaza.  Design features rainwater planters and pervious paving, drought tolerant, native and low maintenance planting, and high efficiency irrigation system.

Green Building Home of the Year Award 2014

LEED certified site plan, landscape design, maintenance, farm and irrigation design for 37-acre family compound and certified organic market farm (featuring perennial poly-culture, specialty and heritage crops) including native habitat restoration and soil building, rain-water harvesting, graywater system, weather sensitive  irrigation, living roof, and functional landscape plantings.

Laird- Jacobsen Residence, Occidental, CA,

Site Planning, landscape design and installation for eight acre hillside residence in the Redwood forest. Extensive stone retaining walls, and terracing, decorative boulder work, slate walkways and stairways, permaculture planting including natives, a variety of edible and habitat plants, mushroom cultivation, selective tree thinning for views, solar access and fire safety, erosion control using logs and mulch produced on-site during tree work.

 

 

Peskin Residence, Sebastopol, CA

Site planning and landscape design for two-acre  homestead renovation including site water flow design, re-use of demolition materials for retaining walls, creek restoration strategies, soil building, perennial poly-cultural food crops, native and Mediterranean plant palette.  Plant selection and layout for living roof.

 

 

Sheehy Residence, Penngrove CA

Landscape design and installation for three-acre oak woodland hill top garden.  Project focus on native restoration, soil building in extremely rocky conditions, food and herb production, drought tolerance, composting system, reworking of existing stone to create sculptural interest throughout, garden pond, drip irrigation system and grey water filtration.

 

 

O’Hara Residence, Sebastopol, CA

Landscape design and installation for two- acre rural residential landscape including interactive children’s garden using recycled cement culverts to create turrets and tunnels play structure, living room within bamboo grove, children’s fragrance and edible garden and stump hop.  Substantial lawn reduction, earth sculpting for rainwater harvesting, soil building, native wildflower meadow, berry and fruit production, drip irrigation system, drought tolerant planting including many natives, brush pile planting and composting.

Design and installation of two-acre woodland residence incorporating sheet mulching for soil building, rainwater storage and drainage creeks, edible and productive planting, terra pave non-toxic paving alternative to asphalt.  Drought tolerant native planting palette.

Farm and Landscape Planning for five-acre Waldorf family operated food production and permaculture farm.  Project required wetland restoration, extensive water flow planning including ephemeral ponds, creeks and swales.  Other project features include integrated pest management, perennial polycultural food cropping, soil building, animal tractoring, and children’s experiential garden, outdoor classroom, composting.

Site Planning, Landscape Design and Farm Plan for 80 acre ecological farm demonstration and residence adjacent to newly established wildlife and regional park trail corridor in Sonoma County.  Project featuring extensive spring, rainwater and watershed development, habitat restoration, integrated, ecological/sustainable perennial agriculture demonstration and environmental art/ stone sculptures.

The Richmond Plunge, Richmond, CA

Landscape design and planting plan, plan review and recommendations for site design and irrigation. Historic public indoor pool and landscape restoration project.  Project objectives including outdoor play space and fountain with bio-swale.  Mostly native plant scheme to provide wildlife habitat and reduce irrigation requirement.

Albany Street Medians, Albany, CA,

Bay Friendly certified project.
Design, construction drawings, maintenance plan, cost estimates, installation observation for 10 street medians at the entry to the City of Albany.  Native drought tolerant “hedge free” planting, IPM chemical free maintenance plan, drip and bubbler irrigation system, organic compost soil amendment  and 4” of locally generated arbor chip sheet mulch with recycled cardboard, 12” of soil aeration.

 

 

Bay-Friendly Landscape Program, Stopwaste.org, CA

Sentient Landscape was an original consultant and presenter for Stopwaste.org’s Bay-Friendly Landscape program, developing the ecological principles, sustainable practices and specification language defined in the Bay-Friendly Landscape Guidelines. With hands-on student participation, the garden program is transforming an undeveloped lot into a multi dimensional permaculture garden, including rain water harvesting, herb spiral, grey water filtration, the development of rich living soils, and the beginnings of a diverse, multi-functional food forest.

 

 

Mighty Oak Preschool , Sebastopol, CA

Landscape design and project management for Waldorf preschool playgarden. Creation of inspiring and intimate play and learning environment for children 18 months to five years old.  Project involved design for child safety while traversing significant topography, decorative and structural retainment using recycled materials, edible, habitat and otherwise functional gardens for interactive learning, play spaces and play structures using organic materials.

Geoff Hall was the director for Sonoma State University’s professional certificate program for Sustainable Landscaping in 2009.  This Sonoma State Extended Education program presents classes in ecological principles, site analysis, water, soil, planting, and maintenance/ operations.   Sentient Landscape developed the curriculum for the ecological principles, site assessment, and soil building courses and Geoff was the program presenter for these ecological principles, site analysis, and soil building from 2009- 2013.
